Soanar Lighting Solutions has released the Ecolume DL series, proprietary LED-based down lights supplied ready-to-mount with their own custom low voltage, constant-current power supply and come in a cool white or warm white versions.

The series down lights are replacements for 50-W halogen down lights, and are designed to exceed lighting requirements for the domestic and commercial markets. Ecolume’s light source is a patented OSRAM 1000 lumen Ostar LED array. It comprises six closely spaced LEDs operating as a single light source and the white version provides an illuminance of 928 Lux at 1 meter§. LED lighting demonstrates two significant environmental benefits over halogen designs.

Most importantly, LED lighting is far more power efficient. For example, when driven at 20 to 24V DC at a constant current of 700mA, the cool white Ostar has an efficacy of 50 lumens per watt (compared with 20 lumens per watt for halogen).

For 750-lumen devices, an LED light consumes 15 Watts (or 38.3 kW/hr per year when used for seven hours per day) while a halogen device consumes 40 Watts (or 102.2 KW/hr per year with the same usage pattern). A halogen bulb may last 5,000 hours before burning out, an LED can last at least 50,000 hours and even then is unlikely to fail catastrophically.

Consequently, using LED lighting as a replacement for halogen realises significant energy savings in the manufacture and disposal of general lighting sources and an associated reduction in carbon emissions.
Ecolume is supplied as a complete unit, comprising a housing designed to fit into a standard down light recess (simplifying replacement of existing halogen down lights), collimating lens of greater than 80 per cent efficiency, Ostar LED array, Sunflower heatsink and Soanar's ELD24700 LED driver. The ELD24700 LED driver has been optimised to provide the constant current demanded by the Osram Ostar.

The driver converts 240 – 250 V AC to 20 – 24 V DC with a conversion efficiency of 89 per cent. The LED generates little Infrared (IR) radiation so virtually no heat is directed into the illuminated area.

The heat generated by the LED is conducted away by the custom-designed Sunflower heatsink and dissipated into the ceiling cavity. In addition, LEDs emit negligible Ultraviolet (UV) radiation so flying insects are not attracted to the light.

“Ecolume is a direct replacement for halogen down lights and allows consumers or commercial users to realise the advantages of LEDs without worrying about the technical considerations. With Ecolume, we’ve taken care of the thermal management and power supply requirements, allowing an electrician to simply replace an existing halogen down light with Ecolume in minutes,” concludes Frank Harrington, business development manager, Soanar Lighting Solutions.
