STMICROELECTRONICS has announced that its Cartesio automotive-grade application processor System-on-Chip (SoC) with embedded GPS is to be used by Garmin inside a range of navigation systems including the nüvi 205.

PND makers are increasingly designing products that use SoC solutions combining host processing capability with GPS functionality which improves reliability, rather than implementing the processor and GPS as discrete functions.

The SoC addresses a large variety of applications in the automotive segment, including OEM and portable navigation devices, vehicle tracking systems, electronic fee collection, and advanced car radio. The processor is a derivative the company’s Nomadik® application processor platform.
