Hardware erasure solution

Kroll Ontrack has released Degausser DG.02 in Australia, a hardware eraser solution capable of eliminating the risk of uncontrolled spread of sensitive information stored on hard drives.

By applying a strong magnetic field, the Degausser erases media in four seconds for a typical hard drive. The erasing is assisted by a bank of sealed lead-acid batteries, which provide the large amount of DC current required. This destroys all information recorded on the unit, including calibration and servo information.

“Many organisations have clear document retention policies that specify how long important data, such as financial or customer records, need to be kept. But many of these same organisations do not have clear policies for handling data that no longer needs to be retained or for disposing old PCs, hard drives, servers and other data storage devices,” says Adrian Briscoe, general manager for Asia Pacific Kroll Ontrack.

“Simply ‘deleting’ all of the files stored on a hard drive or other storage device before recycling it does not protect those files from being recovered. The Degausser has the capacity to take IT security to the next level of zero tolerance when it comes to a potential data leakage.”

The Degausser DG.02 service is suited for defective drives and removable media, including tapes, diskettes, ZIP drives and cassettes.
